Guitar Basics 101: What all beginners should know

The guitar basics that every beginner should know is tuning, what notes corresponds to what fret, and learning open chords. This also includes barre-chords. These are the essentials before advancing to the more difficult levels such as chords or lead guitar theory. After the basics, then one can branch out to the more difficult and exciting aspects of learning the guitar. It's like the old proverb, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step". So, there are several (guitar basic) items that every beginner should know to start that journey of a thousands miles.

First, you need to know how to tune your guitar into perfect pitch (or at least close enough). There are two ways to do this. The first way is to hit two identical notes and adjust the tuning keys to make sure the two notes are in pitch. The second way is to use natural harmonics at the fifth and seventh frets. Either method can be used and are quick ways to keep your guitar in tune. Indeed, there may be a time in which you may have to use any one of these methods. This is especially true in the middle of a gig.

It is also important to know how the guitar is laid out and what notes correspond to what frets. It is very important that you memorize the position of each note on the fret board. This should help you later on when you start learning chords and music theory.

The next thing is to learn how to play open chords. and bar-chords which are essential to play a variety of songs. Hey, not all songs use the power chord.
